Separate

What if Ibsen was a marriage counsellor? Stephanie Jory’s and Terje T. Mikkelsen’s ‘Separate’ is a 75-minute two-hander, set in the round, based on the fabula that underpins ‘A Doll’s House’. In 26 short scenes it turns Ibsen’s marital plot upside down; where Ibsen’s marriage falls apart overnight at Christmas, ‘Separate’ take us through the longer process of a couple trying to save their marriage through individual counselling. The play raises issues of sex, power, gender and current cancel culture. It explores the idea of self and autonomy and, ultimately, to whom we are more responsible – the self or the other.
